Wynspeak - Celebrating Student Voices in our Community

The Wyndham Youth Public Speaking Competition (Wynspeak) was created in 2003 as a Youth Project to provide  a vehicle  to assist young people from the Western region of Melbourne in growing their self-confidence through the development of effective public speaking skills, which are so necessary in a changing world where presentation skills become more important in senior college, tertiary education and in the work place. This project followed an approach to the Rotary club of Hoppers Crossing by long standing Rotarian Des O’Shanassy.  The club embraced the project which has now become the signature Youth project.  The program involve students being presented on stage to provide five minute speeches on the topics of their choice and to also present a two minute speech on mystery topics drawn out of a hat with minimal preparation time. Due to unprecedented interest from colleges in the North West, a preliminary round was held for the first time at Lakeview Senior College in 2018 and five colleges from the outer West and Caroline Springs area took advantage of this. This was the first time a competition round was held outside of Wyndham.

As a consequence of this success, Lakeview has again been invited to be part of this amazing opportunity. This year, we had so many interested students, as a result of Naomi Toner’s fantastic advocacy for the program as a result of her enjoyment in 2018, that we needed to run an “in school” competition decide on our final student nominations. We have also been fortunate to have first Toastmasters and later Rostrum Victoria to assist in providing invaluable support and training for our student voice leaders in the nuances of public speaking.

Thus we invite students, families and broader community to join with us on Tuesday 28th of May in the Lakeview Auditorium at 6:30pm to join with us and celebrate the passionate student voices of Lakeview and other schools within our local community.
